Alpha Centauri (Electronic Arts) is set in the year 2100AD. Players are faced with the classic challenge of building an empire on a largely unknown planet, whilst competing with six other factions. You become one of a crew of internationally renowned scientists and security strategists who embark on a mission to ensure the survival of the human race. The environment and your relationship with it greatly affect your strategies for success in this game. You must explore the alien planet that is your new home and uncover it’s myriad mysteries. You will discover over 75 extraordinary technologies, build large scale secret projects for your empire and conquer your enemies with war machines that you design from over 32,000 possible unit types.
MY OPINION
Alpha Centauri is totally absorbing. It’s deeply addictive gameplay can make hours pass like minutes. For anyone not familiar with the Civilization series, this game may be quite a challenge to get into. There are pop-up tutorials to guide the user through the preliminary stages, but the rest is up to you. The unit sound effects add to the experience. Each faction has their own soundtrack, so you will never become bored with the music. The graphics are pretty good, and each unique unit is very detailed. The manual is not as comprehensive as I would have hoped for, but you are given a huge fold-out chart detailing all the various units and technologies, which is extremely helpful and easy to use. Although not a continuation of the Civilization series, Alpha Centauri is nonetheless an extension of Sid Meier’s top selling title.
