Imperium Galactica 2

Imperium Galactica II is a hugely enjoyable science-fiction real-time strategy game of conquest and exploration. You have control over the destiny of an entire universe and your mission is to conquer the galaxy. You do this by constructing huge cities on your terraformed planets to generate income, war machines and over 150 scientific advancements. You trade with and spy on other cultures and you prepare invasion forces to increase your territory. Throughout the game there is over a full hour of some of the best computer video clips you will have ever seen. The clips are full-screen and are as good as a trip to the cinema.

MY OPINION

Imperium Galactica II is a totally excellent game for anyone who likes the challenge of intergalactic battles. It has faster spacecraft and more powerful weapons than the original game. The mind-blowing 3D space battles enable you to swoop down from a view of the entire galaxy to zoom in on your tanks annihilating an enemy colony on the planet’s surface.

Early in Imperium Galactica II, battles involve dozens of fighters and a few destroyers or corvettes. Midway through the game, battles become more involving and exciting. You have large capital ship technology as well as beam weapons. The strategy in this part of the game is largely based on attacking and defending against powerful torpedoes. Later in the game however, when every race is attacking each other with battle ships and mobile bases strategy strangely becomes minimal. I found this quite frustrating, as there is no reason to move – your ships will fire with more accuracy if they remain stationary. There is no reason to zig-zag, because more advanced torpedoes track their targets easily.

The graphics in this game are first class. Both the space view mode and the planet surface mode are beautifully detailed. There is seasonal rain on the planet view and the space view is glittered with nebulae and galaxy dust. The battleships are wonderfully detailed and the explosions are visually realistic. The sound effects are excellent, with great booming explosions when you blow your enemy from the sky, however the combat chatter can become somewhat repetitive as it is the same for all units. Furthermore, the chatter is often inaccurate. I found the soundtrack a little boring, however that did not detract from my overall enjoyment of this game.

Imperium Galactica II has a high quality manual with over 120 pages of clearly laid out information on glossy galactic designed paper. To sum up, this game is one of the best sci-fi strategy games I have ever played.
